Everquest, with its dated graphics, engine, and limited support is coming on to 13 years. People left EQ2 to play it. They are actually supporting it better now than a few years back.

GW is better. Good game is good. I think this game is far from dead, and will revitalize as players abandon shiny particle effects for good, solid mechanics and playability on a variety of machines.

I also would like to think that the GW servers will be around for some time to come. Still, its likely that eventually (whether its a year or 10 years from now) NCSoft will pull the plug. When that happens we may nto even notice, or we may all lament, hard to say. Either way, I'm definitely in favor of the release of either a downloadable patch to p[lay it in single player only mode or of a server patch for people to set up and maintain their own servers. Generally speaking, when you buy a game you don't actually legally own it, you just have a license to use the game. Since there is no time period specified in the GW license, one could (at least try to anyway) make the argument that the license should exist as long as you have desire to play the game.

Most of the time when it doesn't work that way, its because no one really challenges the publisher to live up to the original licensing agreement.

Some might, but the large majority wont. And a large chunk of GW2 players aren't GW players in the first place.

While I like GW2 and feel it will improve over time to become something equally special, gw1 remaining as a playable game would be good too.

I wouldnt want it as an offline game but as long as it stays and events are held I will keep playing but only occasionally.

They will keep the game running as long as they don't start losing money on it, at which point its perfectly reasonable for them to do so. The costs of running this game however are near trivial.

To those comparing this game to Diablo 2, not even close to the same situation. Diablo 2 is run on Battle.net, which runs other games, including newer games like D3 and SC2. It costs them a trivial amount of money to keep it running when its infrastructure is being used by other products that generate massive income. Diablo 2 also isn't an MMO.

Unless it has been stated otherwise, they will continue to sell GW1 after GW2 releases so people new to the series can get HoM cosmetics. If GW2 is remotely successful, theres no reason to think GW1 will be shut down for years to come.

It will be shut down eventually though. Thats simply part of the nature of MMOs, and if you thought you would be able to play it "forever" you were mistaken. When its time is up, its time is up, and you will just have to live with it.

Your opinion on this is in the minority. Everquest has always been more successful then GW, because it appeals more to the general MMO community. GW1 however does not remotely appeal to the general MMO community, which is why it never got particularly popular. What you call solid mechanics and playability, the majority of MMOers call them stiff restrictive mechanics and near zero playability.

This is however part of the reason why I think GW1 is in for some major changes after GW2 releases. When that general MMO player base comes into this game to get HoM/GWAMM, and they see what the game is like, and how much time/effort it will require, they will be furious that they spent money on it, and Anet will likely be forced to put in major nerfs across the board.

I sure hope anet will allow us to download our account data and offer a local server option, ive spend over 400 euros on guild wars which includes 3 collectors editions and while it has been money well spend with over 5000 hours of actualy gametime clocked, i feel that if the servers would close and all our stuff deleted that it would have been the biggest waste of time ever, in a sense it already is, but its been enjoyable and ive grown attached to my characters.

I think it was gaile gray that once said that they will provide us with the tools to run our own servers when the time came, and allow us to download our characters, that was about 5 years ago.

To make sure is not gonna be the cheater mayhem when the time comes and server side is release, the server files should be highly encrypted so nobody can modify it and make servers with mods like every mobs drops an ecto or x100 exp multiplicator, so we can enjoy the real GW exp.

I think they should at the very least find a way to preserve everybody's accounts, and make it so GW1 users can play on some offline server or something. Other games have kept going for far longer than seven years, and I think it'd be cruel to wipe everyone's data simply because old game is old. While I know I don't play GW1 like a newly released game, I'd still like it if I had the opportunity to go back and play through a part of the game again to enjoy it.

if they close the game, then the HOM is pointless to have thus making GW2 lore pointless. it WILL stay up but may be corrupted.

You realise that if they do release the server files, none of what you say would matter?
Once they shut down their game servers, all continuity between player accounts is lost anyway so private/personal servers, with or without modified parameters, will have no bearing on anything else other than themselves.

I haven't posted here in a while because last time I did, I was getting trolled and harassed singly by someone. But I'll try again because I did something that others may want to do also.

I don't know how long GW1 will stay online and I don't want to come off as a pretentious gamer who does not work for ArenaNet or NC Soft by stating an estimate. We see enough of that sort of thing here. But I'm sure GW1 will still be around for a while.

But what I did do is take screen shots of my main PvE character, that character's title tracks in the Hero window, and all the sections of my HoM calculator on the GW2 website. I also did screen shots of my valuable and favorite items in the game like everlasting tonics, weapons, armor, miniatures, and more. I used a photoshop program to trim them down. I took screen shots of the info boxes of my items and combined them in the same photo by category.

I did that for myself so if, years later, I do think about when I used to play GW1, I can refer to the screen shots to see what I did and what I got. I have those and more organized in folders within one folder on my computer and it's all backed up on a couple of external hard drives. I suppose it's something others may consider doing for themselves so I wanted to share that here. It's a way to document what you've done in the game.

EverQuest has been running for 13 years, Diablo II (bnet) for 12 (although there are working LAN server repacks for both systems and d2 is also single player/lan). The only reason we dread losing GW is because it only "boots" and plays when there is a connection to arena net. They have control, and apparently it's quite hard to get a LAN repack working for GW because..well... it's an MMO. EQ emulators and D2 bnet emulators are successful (also World of Warcraft emu's) because they've ether been out a LONG time and people have perfected them (bnet and eq1) or had MASSIVE popularity (wow).

I would have loved if GW1 was designed a little differently, to handle singleplayer/lan/internet on the fly. Shoot, I would probably play a million more hours of GW1 knowing I'd have it forever, and I still wouldn't cheat.

I think it sucks that I could get a LAN repack up and running in 30 seconds for WoW, but not a single one exists for GW.

Actually, you have a great point.... and this is what we would all imagine. Now, Guild Wars, in terms of starting areas and storylines is still the same and available for people to enjoy new and old to the game, but having played EverQuest II (for example) for TWO SHORT years, they took the game and put it into a juicer. Every so often another legacy quest line gets removed from the game or ruined by the removal of one key NPC/zone in said quest line. Hell, the entire lore of eq2 has literally been rewritten and lost since 2004.

Not really. The HoM rewards are just bonus items there to give people a head start when the game launches. Once GW1 stops bringing in profit its going to get the ax from NCsoft. I would love to think the game would continue for 6-10 years but there is no way of telling. Just because we say there's more celestial minis to go or there's a bonus item in GW2 if you play GW1 don't mean squat.

Repeating myself, I find the parallels between the Everquest games and this to be quite amusing.

EQ2, set in the future, continuing the "lore" but totally changing the world by cataclysm. New graphics, effects, enhanced characters, streamlined advancement as compared to original, etc etc. It was a "new" game, and only fragmented lore carried over.

It was also depicted as being the absolute death of Everquest, and the same commentary was made then as is being made now regarding GW vs GW2.

And yet.. Everquest survives, and SOE isn't leaving it up for charity. I imagine the same will happen here, and the holdouts who prefer this game will allow it to survive. Who knows.. not everyone loves the emperors new clothes.

What is also amusing is how, over the years, more and more features, lands and cities of the original Everquest were, and continue to be, brought back into the EQ2 game, and yet.. most of my guild went back to EQ including some who had never played it. They didn't come back, either.

It will be interesting to see what expansions bring back to GW2 from this game.

While I'd like to see us refrain from talking down at others and shooting down their experience and knowledge, to try to have the last word and then decide that a debate is done with that is also unsavory. Or maybe you were trying to end the conflict to avoid it with a good intention. Still, I'd like to suggest, not decide or dictate, but suggest that Daltanis can rebute again if he/she wants to. If that works for everyone. Then move back to the topic/idea of preserving GW1.

EDIT: added something but changed my mind, removed the addition
